Parody of Thomas Beatie?

January 31, 2009

Corsa coverAn Argentinean racing magazine, Corsa, just published an issue with a “pregnant man” on the cover. He’s a racer called Marcos Di Palma, “el Loco” (the crazy man); here’s another picture of him wearing this fake belly.

Why did he do this? Translated, he said that “These pictures are, in some way, a homage to my fans, because being a fan of mine is like going into labor. And with all the taunting, they suffer more than if they were pregnant.” Is it just me, or is that totally senseless?

If these pictures are intended to raise a controversy for publicity, it’s working: several newspapers featured the story. If pregnant men and transmen were considered “normal”, this wouldn’t grab our attention; but apparently, they/we are still a curiosity.

I tryed to post in english, but i got confuse about the grammar, so i’ll do it in spanish, i hope it doesn bother you.

Do you mind if I translate? (it doesn’t bother me if you post in Spanish; just so English-readers can understand :))

Principito says: “I think if in the past the pregnancy of a transman hadn’t been publicized, this photo would have passed as just another attempt of attracting attention. However, a photo like this one, that already has publicity, can then generate controversy. Before the news about the pregnant transman was known (at least 8 years ago), a guy had made some similar photos and it didn’t cause a scandal, since there were no reasons for it to be misunderstood. Too bad that the media give him the power he wants.”

That’s a very good point! It’s like gay stuff: in the past, there used to be “funny” commercials about two men being a couple. They were considered harmless because the idea of two men being together was ridiculous. Now, this kind of commercial is controversial.
